Cette imitation de Tarzan met en vedette un jeune garçon en lieu et place du seigneur de la jungle d'Edgar Rice Burroughs. Créé par Roy Rockwood, il apparaissait dans une vingtaine de volumes édités entre 1926 et 1938. Au cinéma il donna lieu à une série de 12 films tous interprétés par Johnny Sheffield. Johnny Sheffield fût le Boy de Johnny Weissmuller dans 3 Tarzan de chez M.G.M. et 5 Tarzan de la R.K.O.
Dans le dernier, Tarzan et la chasseresse, Weissmuller avait 43 ans et Sheffield, âgé de 16, commencait à pouvoir prétendre au rôle titre. Il ne pouvait donc que disparaître de la série. C'est à ce moment qu'il se reconvertit en Bomba. Cette série de films ne bénéficiait pas du même budget que les Tarzan de la R.K.O. La jungle qui y est présentée tient dans un studio de 20 m2, les mêmes stock-shots d'animaux sauvages sont reproduits d'un film à l'autre, Bomba lui-même est assez joufflu. Et pourtant cette série est restée inoubliée.
